The Monument is a memorial created in memory of those who lost their lives in the Great Fire that started on the 22^nd of September. The exact location of the fire is said to be 202 feet away from the present day point where the monument resides. The fire happened from the King’s Bakery on the Pudding lane. Since the bakery ovens were not extinguished properly, the heat started creating those sparks and thus resulted in setting alight the head baker of the king, Thomas Farriner’s wooden house.  During those days, majority of the houses in the streets were made from wood.
